Odessa Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park rests high in a steep subalpine valley defined by varied mountain terrain and sensational alpine scenery en route to this idyllic and much celebrated lake.

"Legend has it that the name of the Purgatoire River recalls the unfortunate deaths of Spanish fortune seekers who ventured into this river's canyon and died before receiving last rites. The Spanish religious faithful named the
river "El Rio de Las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio", which translated means the River of Lost Souls in Purgatory.
French trappers later renamed the river Purgatoire."
